MAGPLUG Cementing Special System

Overview Headline

MAGPLUG provides an excellent alternative to temporary zonal isolation cement produced by the reaction of magnesium compounds. It consists of magnesium oxysulfate [calcined magnesium oxide + magnesium sulfate (Epsom salt)] plus powder carbonates. Once MAGPLUG is mixed with water, it forms a hydrated paste that is not typically affected by contaminants as it would with Portland cement mixtures. Unlike normal cement, MAGPLUG hardens by chemical reaction rather than by hydration process. It also develops considerably greater compressive and tensile strengths than Portland cement.

Recommended Application

MAGPLUG is a free-flowing powder that can be easily mixed in the field (any slug pit or tank large enough) to form a pumpable slurry. It can be used in the following scenarios:

  • Temporary zonal isolation
  • Diverter
  • Control lost circulation

Since MAGPLUG performance is less affected by low content of inorganic or organic contaminants, water quality is therefore not as important as it is for cement. Fresh water, industrial water or seawater can be used without causing changes to the mixing procedures. If required ,

MAGPLUG is acid soluble (hydrochloric acid @ 15%) and can be used to temporarily seal off and protect producing zones during interventions.

Although typically mixed at 13 ppg, MAGPLUG can be mixed in a wide density range with the addition of light weight and weighting materials.
